In the summer of 2021, Oliver Dowden, the British Deputy Prime Minister, accused the Chinese hacking group APT31 of attempting to conduct surveillance on UK lawmakers' email accounts. APT31 is a "China-nexus cyber espionage actor" focused on obtaining information that could benefit the Chinese government and state-owned enterprises. Despite their attempts, Dowden stated that the hackers were unsuccessful in their efforts to compromise the email accounts of UK lawmakers.
