It is closely related to Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and is based on decentralisation, security, and user control principles. In essence, DID provides a trusted and confidential means of managing digital identities in a user-centric fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In traditional identity systems, user identities are managed by organisations or central authorities. Decentralised identity empowers individuals by placing them at the core of identity management, granting them greater control over their personal information. It is possible to achieve this by utilising decentralised technologies such as blockchain or distributed ledger technology to store and manage identity data. Instead of depending on just one identity provider, the information is distributed among multiple network participants, improving security and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decentralised identity relies on a crucial element called the DID Document. The data structure is associated with a Decentralised Identifier (DID) and contains essential information such as public keys, authentication methods, and service endpoints. DID Documents are crucial in Decentralised Identity as they facilitate decentralised interactions and verifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, DID Methods are responsible for establishing guidelines and procedures for generating, managing, and resolving DIDs on specific decentralised networks or ledgers. Several DID Methods can be used with blockchain platforms such as Ethereum and Hyperledger Indy. Each method provides a clear set of instructions for creating, updating, and resolving DIDs on the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verifiable Credentials are often used in decentralised identity, just like self-sovereign identity. Trusted parties issue these credentials, and can be cryptographically verified. Users can collect these credentials in their digital wallets and present them for transactions or interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decentralised identity emphasises selective disclosure, which means individuals can choose which parts of their identity information they want to share in a given context. This minimises the sharing of unnecessary personal data and enhances privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decentralised identity is characterised by its key feature of Interoperability. Verifiable credentials and DIDs offer a convenient way to use and share information across different platforms, services, and organisations. This eliminates the need for users to create multiple identities for various online services, promoting a seamless user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privacy and security are paramount in decentralised identity systems prioritising user privacy. All data is encrypted, and cryptographic techniques are utilised to ensure the authenticity of credentials and identity information. Users are empowered to control who accesses their data and under what conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several potential uses for Decentralised Identity, such as secure online authentication, access to government services, KYC (Know Your Customer) processes, healthcare records, and supply chain management. Furthermore, this technique can ensure secure device identification in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its many benefits, Decentralised Identity faces scalability, regulatory compliance, and adoption challenges. Developing interoperable standards and addressing legal and regulatory concerns are ongoing efforts to overcome these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decentralised identity represents an innovative strategy for managing digital identities, utilising decentralised technologies to grant users autonomy over their identities, augmenting privacy and security measures.
